ATLANTA (CBS46) – An original Madam C.J. Walker salon still sits on Hilliard Street, east of downtown Atlanta.
The house of hair is now a museum.
Curator Ricci deForest found the hidden gem about 12 years ago. He said he kept the shop in its original shape, in order to preserve its history.
“To have a continuously operated business from the Jim Crow era to still function as that same business, is a testament to the sustainability and the significance of Madam C.J. Walker for one because this is her salon but also other beauty pioneers,” said deForest.
In the back of the salon you’ll find “Colored Women Only” and “White Women Only” signs. They weren’t part of the original salon, but deForest told CBS46 they were added to tell the full story of that time.
The museum is free to all visitors.
