Last year the city of Memphis was on top of the charts when the Royal Studios recorded “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars won Record of the Year. It was the first time in the history of the Grammy Awards that a Memphis made record took home the award.
Royal Studios, which started out as a theater in 1915 and then converted to a recording studio in 1957 by Willie Mitchell, is still in strong operation today under the direction of his son producer extraordinaire, Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell.
Talk show host Dee Dee Koen sat down with Mitchell in an interview. Listen to it in its entirety below.
I was Born in Chicago got my first piano at 6 years-of-age and have been show business bound ever since! My most memorable moment is when Michael Jackson jumped off a stage into my arms! I Studied Music at Tennessee State University and later became the lead singer for “Fulfillment n Joy ” in Charleston, South Carolina as well as a Jazz vocalist on Beale Street in Memphis Tennessee. I love God and I believe in developing value in others! I love to talk and I love people.
